You may be able to find some in an occasional Chest, but certainly not enough for any recipes (so you may not want to rely on this). Unless you are a skinner or have some relationship with one, the auction house would be the only reliable way to get leather.
But on the good side, getting leather is pretty easy. If you have a partner who is a skinner, it would not be too hard to convince them to part with some leather.

Am I missing something? I thought that was a computer game. Why would you need leather? Much less craft things from leather. Please tell me. I'm not knocking anyone. The logic escapes me. Or warcraft has an entirely different meaning.

Plain and simple - you must be a skinner to get leather. It does not drop as loot aside from the occasional chest.

Have a really close friend that is a skinner. I'm a herblist and alchemy but I hook up my friends with herbs all the time.
