When you said "do not consider irelands," I presume you meant 'islands'.

Of the countries on the African mainland, Gambia is the smallest at 11,295 km².
2nd smallest: Swaziland, 17,364 km² ;
3rd smallest: Djibouti, 23,200 km² ;
4th smallest: Rwanda, 26,338 km² ;
5th smallest: Burundi, 27,834 km² ;
6th smallest: Equatorial Guinea, 28,051 km² .

If you do include island countries, the answer becomes much more complicated, because you have to ask the question: "What is a country ?" Would you count Mayotte as a 'country' ? It's a French dependency (technically, a collectivité territoriale). Its area is only 372 km². And what about Ascension Island ? This is a British colony with an area of 88 km². But it is 2500 km from the nearest point on the African mainland. So is it part of Africa or not ? If you only consider independent African island-nations, the smallest is the Seychelles at 455 km² , followed by Sâo Tomé & Principé at 964 km² , follwed by Mauritius at 2040 km² .

My family moved from Pretoria, South Africa to the Toronto, Canada area when I was young. Toronto is a very multicultural city and I've met many other ex-pat South Africans here (of many different ethnic and racial backgrounds). My parents had no trouble meeting other South Africans when we first arrived (even ended up next door to a few!). Of course you'll want to consider Canada's ever-changing Immigration policies and the fact that we have a public healthcare system here (from what I hear, Doctor's are treated rather well, especially specialists) but I would highly recommend it. Toronto specifically is an extremely open-minded and diverse place. Your son should have no trouble finding community. There are two very different geographic gay communities, one in the East End / Downtown area and one in the West End. Toronto is also home to a very, very large annual Gay Pride parade and celebration. Many people who live in the Toronto area buy property in one of the many towns and cities that make up the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and commute into the city for work or school. If you're looking for countryside properties, there are tons of areas to explore anywhere from an hour north of the city to 8 hours depending on how remote you want to get :)

There are about fifty countries in Africa. The largest country is the Republic of Sudan and the smallest is Seychelles. Algeria is the second largest country in Africa and Cairo is the largest city. Both are located in Egypt.

My guess is Gambia.

And Ireland is definitely the second largest island in the group commonly called the British Isles.
