I mean, do you think it's a good idea to have just ONE day in the week when we think about other things rather than consumerism? (I'm not talking about religion)

Yes I do, it should go back to being a day of rest where families have to spend the day at home together doing family orientated things such as eating together, playing games and actually talking.
Today's society seems to have lost the importance of family values.

It would be better if they went back to closing all the pubs in our lovely quiet, rural area (Dwyfor) on a Sunday. The authorities pulled a very dirty trick on us.We had been the only area in Wales (UK too I believe)
that had pubs closing on Sundays.Every few years the dry/wet referrendum was held and the result was the inevitable.....dry.
A few years back the 'authorities' moved the goalposts and included another area in with ours-(Arfon)which contained larger urban areas and the result....wet.It would not have been so bad if we had had the chance to change back again but no, they then decided...right,that was the FINAL referrendum...no more...like it or lump it...Sorry but that underhand trick went right up my nose...if you can't win by fair means....

how would that help, should we close on Saturday as well in respect of other religions. or on every religious festival of every religion. The shops would never be open.

No , except as a day off, Sunday is nothing special anymore. The people have moved on

In theory it would be nice to think the shops should be closed but in practical terms we must realise that for some people, it's probably the only day that they can go shopping.

No. Shop opening is essential in this day and age. Its not irreverent, you can still go to church as well. When the big G made it all and rested on the 7th day it was not in the year 2007.

No, I don't think it would be better for society. Chavs would be chavs even if they can't buy their sovereign rings and WKD Blue on Sunday. They'll just buy it on Saturday night when they buy their lottery tickets!!

No, definitely not! It would be a serious infringement on people's liberties on the part of the state, something like "mother knows best", which is offensive to most adults. We should be concentrating on reducing the paternalistic tendencies of the government, not trying to encourage them!
