I wouldn't say I'm "really good" but I know all the basic chords, jazz chords, scales, and I can improv solos in any key to pretty much any style of music. I never had a teacher except for books. I guess I am "self-taught" although musical inclination seems to run in my family. My grandfather did teach me the very basic chords, but nothing else. From there I got books and learned to play my favorite songs by ear. Also, many great guitarists, including Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix, were self-taught, so yes, if it's really in you to be a good guitar player, I suppose you can.

of course. i am not saying that i am a really good guitar player, but i can definitely say that i am improving so much. i am currently on scaling, and learning how to play solos. i didnt get the help of a tutor or teacher. i just asked on how to read tabs, and the rest was history. all it takes is a good and solid practice.

of couse someone can learn how to play the guitar without a teacher my best friend leaned how to play the guitar all by himself and now he's in a local band and when they play shows the whole place is packed and i mean PACKED lol

I have been playing for over 35 years and I am self taught. I've been told that I kick a$$. It's all a matter of dedication and practice, practice, practice. Even after 35 years, I still practice at least an hour every day.

only if they have some type of music education, i learned piano for ten years and now i can play kickarse guitar but only because i had a knowledge base to work with. i suppose you could spend all day practising tabs and learning chord from books but you should get a couple of lessons every now and then.

Yes my brother teaches himself... Well he plays songs then he like tries to imitate them then he gets my advice on what sounds better or my personal favourite... Have fun playing ;)
