Built in ovens are taller than Built under ovens. the maximium size a built under oven can be is 720mm tall (in UK) as this is the standard door height for base units.
Built in ovens can be anything upto 1200mm and fit in a larder style cupboard

"Built in" is built into a tall cupboard, which extends above the height of the work surface. "Built under" is built into a space beneath the work surface. So no, they are not interchangeable - a "built in" oven will be much taller than a "built under".

I think that a built in oven is fitted into the tall larder type cupboards. and a built under oven is fitted under a worktop with the hob on top.

A built under oven will have proper finished off sides on it as the sides are on display in the kitchen. As where a built in oven does not have the outer casing sides on it and needs to be installed with a cupboard around it xxx

you should have a metal strip that has to be positioned when using some (cheaper ) ovens. I bought a house once and had the same problem - the heat deflector plate was located on top the kitchen unit !!!

Basically the same, just an oven in a cupboard, therefore interchangeable, at least mine was.
