That's true. From electronic products, to cosmetics, hardware and even clothing. We see these products in any supermarket and hardware store.
This is because of the modern Chinese technology, labor costs of these products become very cheap, without jeopardizing the quality. Hence, these products are sold much cheaper than those products made in Japan, USA or Europe.

Slave labor. No medical benefits. Low wages. Child labor. Political prisoner labor. All of the above and Probably a lot of civil right issues I did not think of. Oh yes Sweat shops. I used to work for a hardware company. and any of the electric tools that were made in china were marked up 70% verses the 10% American tools were marked up. That is a whole lot more profit for the company. Cheap Bast@rds.

It has captive labour and also authoritarian regime, where it can turn the country into a jail and get whatever it want. However, China do not have dependable statistics or data to know what is really going on. Take for example, if we beleive its food grains production, it should have four times more food gains that its requirements. But China is not a surplus state in food grains.

Manufacturers generally try to find the cheapest source of labor. China has the most populous nation, and thus has an ample supply of laborers. RIght now, China is experiencing a rapid rate of economic growth. In a few years, their quality of life will probably go up, and wages will go up. Then, companies will move on to other nations to find cheaper labor.

the reason is china is able to make goods at cheaper prices as compared to what domestic manufacturers can produce and that's why most of the goods u see in local stores are made in china. hope this helps.
EDIT: Just to answer "mistercvddumps" (above answerer), china is growing at 9% growth rate for past 25 yrs and it will continue to grow at same rate for next 25 yrs to come. so dont make such vague predictions.

Some people are willing to work for the wages they are offered. I think they should raise the wages for the Chinese person who just wants to support his/her family.
