You think daily living things are more expensive than electronics? Last time I checked an apple was a lot less expensive than a laptop.
For example, what things?

Yes, I totally understand what you are saying. Basically, it is because of the import/export expenses. Japan is the worlds supplier of top of the line electronics. Brands like Sony, Sharp, Toshiba, Aiwa, etc. go all over the world. So domestic prices are comparably cheaper. They are also very easy to get.

While on the other hand, since land is so scarce, growing vegetables and fruits is at a premium. Also, to grow top of the line fruits (perfectly round melons, etc.) take a lot of effort, and farmers ask for top yen for their service. For example, the Japanese pears (nashi), for the cheap ones, you can get a bag of eight to ten for 300 yen at a fruit shop. Not so sweet and a little gamy. But the top of the line Japanese pear, 2000 yen for one. Huge, and beautiful, extremely delicious. But for daily stuff, main reason is because they have to import most of it from places like the UK and America, and China.
