There are several tribal colleges which offer free tuition to members of federally-recognized tribes. Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO is one such college. At any of these colleges you still have to pay for your own room and board. Most schools which offer free tuition are technical schools only, meaning they offer technical skills training. They typically do not offer an associate or bachelor's degree.

Each state and college has their own rules regarding the cost of tuition for tribes whose reservations reside in their respective state. Montana offers free tuition to any state college for registered members of tribes who graduate on a reservation that resides in their state. Inquire with a financial aid officer at the school your boyfriend is interested in to find out the types of assistance they offer.

As an addendum, Harvard University recently enacted a financial assistance program which offers free tuition to ANY high school graduate whose family's total income is less than $40,000 per year, IIRC. There are several other colleges that offer similar programs to any person irregardless of gender and race.

Also, housing assistance is offered to ANY low-income citizen of the United States. There are housing assistance loans set aside specifically for registered members of federally-recognized tribes to build homes on their respective reservations though.

To those people who complain about Native Americans getting things for free, quit whining. The "benefits" Native Americans receive are available to any other citizen of the US.

you need to be at least 1/4 Native American to qualify for free schooling, I am not sure if it's completely free schooling or if it's a certain grant amount they offer. The housing is on reservations and goes according to your income, sort of like housing projects are operated. Check with the nearest Tribal Government Office for any of these benefits. The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewas also offers free health and dental care for tribal members in the tribal health clinics. I am not sure if this is provided by all tribes.

You have to be a registered member of an existing tribe and the tribal government will know how to access this assistance. However, some schools also have this information for Native Americans.

Mention it on college applications under ethnicity. Also, google or wikipedia it for more info. However, the best tactic is to just plain pick up the phone and call the admissions department of the school and ask. worst they can tell you is "no".
