My daughter is 15 months old now, and we have been doing mom & baby groups since she was 6 months. I also am a bit shy, but I found it pretty easy to get along with other stay at home moms. We all have something in common right from the beginning - our babies. And babies take up a lot of conversation :) It is not really a clique, it is actually very supportive for the moms, especially when your own baby is going through a stage or a sickness that other moms have already been through. As for the babies, they do get to socialize as much as a baby does - which is usually playing near each other but not necessarily with each other (parallel play is important for a baby's development). They also get to make friends at a young age, and if there is a particualar baby that your daughter gets along with, you can set up individual playdates as the babies become toddlers and play more with each other. (This is also a good way for you or the other mom to get a break for a couple hours...) We actually belong to 2 mom & baby groups - one quite large with almost 50 moms (I still haven't even met some of them!), and the other is small with only 7 moms. If you did want to find a local group, you may feel more comfortable with a smaller group since you are shy. It will be much easier to get to know one another.

Even if I was not part of these groups, my daughter still gets plenty of social time. She is my shopping buddy, goes everywhere with me. We visit with family a few times a month. She goes out to eat with my husband and me. This coming summer she will be old enough to be running around the playground, so we'll be doing that even more than last summer when all we could do was the infant swing.

you know i went through about the time my daughter was 7 months. problem they were geared for stay at home moms, and unfortunatly i cannot be. i found the one i was in to be like a high school prep club. the mothere's talked about the other mothers and complained about their husbands and all they did without any praise. and the babies just sat in front of the moms playing with a toy they could have been playing with at home. i know not all groups are like this, but i found just taking my daughter to the park or the mall to be better. she was able to get out and see new things, and we were able to spend time together and not under the scrutiny of other "perfect" moms. plus she's 9 month old, she really won't be able to play with other kids for several more months. let her take this time to do things at her own pace and look into a mommy's day out when she's old enough. she'll only miss out on you.

My son is 11 months old and I don't take him to baby groups... but I do take him everywhere with me... the grocery store... to family and friends houses, etc. So I think he receives plenty of interaction with others. Maybe when he's a little older I'll try out a play group though.
