I watched the film American Psycho last night and i really don't understand the ending at all. Has the bloke actually killed all of the people in the film or is he mentally disturbed?

Both. They covered up the murder in the apartment room because it was an uber expensive place and they didn't want rich people to stop living there.

The ending is left open exactly like the novel. Mary Harron has applied a reading to the film that elevates it from a nasty piece of porno it could have been, to the biting satire of the macho '80's Easton Ellis intended. Immaculately groomed Bateman clones use dinner reservations and business cards to stave off growing feelings of emasculation and inferiority.

Bateman is an arch fantasist. He dreams of being a killer as it is the only thing that can elevate him from his world of desensitised conformity. Note the scene where he shoots at the police car and it blows up. Its all in his head. He's a sad delusional man unable deal effectively with an array of dysfunctional relations with women, perhaps some closeted gay gay tendencies. What the hell was he doing following Louis into the toilet?

His is a reaction against privilege he knows he doesn't deserve. He is violently self-destructive only hasn't the nuts to admit this hoping to punished for unspeakable crimes he has fantasised to cover for his sense of societal guilt. There is a sign on the door directly behind Patrick Bateman at the very final scene. He has learned nothing, is numbed from the decadence and delusion of the times hes living in, the sign says 'This is not an Exit'. Here is the punishment. Misunderstood and uncomprehending he is always trapped and alone with his fantasies of power and potency.

By the way ever see Rules Of Attraction? His brother Sean is also one sick little unloved puppy!!

Mr Fox has hit the nail on the head. The narrative should be recognised as a savage satire.

The ending is not defined, in order to let the audience ponder the question and come up with their own conclusions. Ultimately, there is no answer to this question, other than the one you come up with yourself.
