Why is it necessary? Are the schools inadequate? And if so, are you hiding the problem by tutoring your child so that it appears they are being taught properly?

I know kids who were tutored at a primary school level as if their parents felt they would fail if they didn't receive that tutoring. The fact is, that most children should receive a proper degree of teaching at primary school that will gear them for secondary and there are few few teachers who fail in that department. And, the first year or two of secondary is enough to determine whether your child needs additional tutoring.

So, I don't see the need in tutoring primary school children (unless they are about to sit an Eleven-Plus exam as required by some English schools). It's cruel to add more on the workload of children when they're at an age where their main concerns should be play and socialising. There's plenty of time for tutoring at high school. For those few schools that are so dire, tutoring isn't the answer. Switching your child to another school after sending a harshly worded letter to the headmaster, education board and press is a better solution if anything is to be done.

Coming from an Asian background, I can say that pressuring children to be tutored before secondary school can increase their academic abilities a lot. I was forced into being tutored when I was a kid living in Taiwan...although US tutorin is probably not as intense (unless your kid goes to tutors from 5-11 everyday). I think it's not a matter of schools, its due to parents' worry about their children. I personally think that children being tutored before high school is bad, since children needs to have their fun, and participate in sports etc.

No I don't. The only thing I require is that teacher's do their job properly and with respect of the students-teach, and that the students do the best they can at their tasks. If they have problems with some of it, that is what the teacher is there for-to teach.
