Hey Mike,
Is the shifter floppy? Check the linkage. If is a floor shifter remove the shifter ( you may find a broken bolt at the tranny there), carpet, and floor panel above the transmission.
A tree shifter has the linkage, off the steering column, in the engine compartment, then it works its way down to the tranny.
Could be the clutch is fried and ready for replacement. Don't forget the pilot bearing removing tool. What is the clutch pedal doing?

Because there are clutches inside the transmission called syncronizers. When the gears are disingaged,the syncros sync the gears on the mainshaft to an aligned position.

1.) no engine or engine is turned off...
2.) transmission shift linkage broken or disconnected...
3.) no driveshaft or driveshaft disconnected from tranny
4.) transfer case in nuetral...

clutch or flywheel is gone, you need to change that for it to go into gear, and stay in gear

brother you probably broke off your gear stick, it does happen! toyotas are bad for it. it could also be your selectors, or your lack of. get your gearbox overhauled bro
