The main problems which affects infrastructure, education and ultimately rate of development is primarily the sheer size of the population and the resources required to do the basics, such as feed them or transport them to work, are colossal. Sadly, corruption always hinders development because the citizens are paying double the price for a bad job!

An agricultural base, along with a humongous population, makes India somewhat dependent on its agriculture. If India wants to become a developed country, it would have to import its food and concentrate everybody on technology and industry.

I doubt theres only one main problem that connects every problem. I think the problem with allot of countries is same as people, lack of confidence. India needs more examples of success for it's people to strive for.

UNITY!! People of India sure lack unity......keeping aside the urban areas, rural areas still discriminate on the basis of caste, creed, religion and sex.
Also over-population is another factor.
I think awareness programs will surely help this out.

Fear in the Air.
Fear is not in the minds of the People.
Whenever a crime is committed, a lot of fear is released in the air, which we import though unconsciously.
The Day we will be fearless, we will be a developed Nation.
