If you don't think you could live in a city, forget Japan. The whole place is practically one big city. There are some rural parts actually, but I doubt there are many jobs there. The thing is, we have a recession here in the USA and lots of people are unemployed here too. We're not really clamoring for immigrants. In order to get a work visa you need to have a skill that's in demand. Veterinary medicine, hmm, I don't know. You might want to think about getting a degree in nursing or medicine for people. That's in demand, whether it's in the class of jobs you can immigrate with I don't know. However veterinary medicine sounds like a good career. Maybe you have a good chance to get a job in your own country. Maybe later if you want you will find an opportunity to emigrate.

People who say that Japan is more expensive to live in that NY don't really know Japan. Their stereotype of Japanese living conditions is Tokyo. If your question was Tokyo or NY, I assume NY would be cheaper. But the question was Japan or NY. There are tons of places in Japan that are cheaper to live in that NY. The further away from Tokyo you move, the cheaper it gets, basically. Job opportunities? If you speak English, you can get private students and make a ton of money. But then there is the visa problem. If you get a job with some company, they will sponsor you for your visa, but without sponsorship, a visa is hard to come by. But I agree with the other guy, if you don't like Japan, why even consider living here?

Good luck!

needless to say,of course japan.
let's compare japan with new york in the cost of things.
what about the rent, first of all????
i have been wondering how come the rent of such old & dirty appartments could be that expensive...( i am from tokyo)
and...what about the cost of dining-out????
you must pay the tip at least 15% for the shitty services in new york! there is no this thing in japan...people serve very well without tipping custom.
what about the medical expenses????
the america's medical system itself is kind of mafia's stuff compared to japan's one.
i know some people will boo me...but what i am saying is the truth..i am a japanese and live in new york now..
before i came here,i couldn't really imagine anything negative about america...
i still love the great dynamic nature in the US,like grand canyon, monument valley and such.
however, especially new york...sometimes it even seems like a depeloping country...high crime rate, dirty streets, smelly stations.......and home electric appliances all suck!!!

Japan's the most amazing place I've ever travelled to, so I'd say Japan. I've never been to New York, but if it's like I've heard, it's crowded, noisy and expensive. Japan was expensive to me, but I couldn't believe how safe and quiet and peaceful the city of Tokyo was. Stay in Japan. I'd join you if I could!

It seems you answered your own question. If you don't like Japan, then you should live in New York.

If you're referring to the cost of living, then I would say that New York is a better place to live, since you don't have to live in the heart of the city. You can live in the suburbs or find a roommate so that you can reduce your home expenses.

japan has a high cost of living, and nearly everything is insanely expensive...IF you are from america. in japan the minimum wage is really high, i forget how much but lets just say if you work at mcdonalds you can afford your own place to live, and buy PS3 games without worry.

but i think japan is much more crowded than NY, although safer, a NY apartment is probably twice as big as one in japan. but really, if you can't speak japanese, dont even think about it.
