This can be dangerous because of the water temperature, and the smell of vinegar may not be much better, but put a casserole 1/2 full of hot water and a 1/2 cup of vinegar in the microwave and turn it on for about 2 minutes till almost boiling. Then let it sit overnight or whatever, the next day most of the smell should be gone, repeat maybe twice...
The smell is not in the areas you can clean easily and wipe down with a cloth, but in the vents and stuff...wiping all the interior with a good cleaner will help, but steaming out the interior is what does it.
Please DO NOT use bleach, ammonia, or a commercial cleaner with what I suggested!!!! Vinegar is the safest. Use a commercial cleaner with a cloth, not in the boiling water.
My mom somehow burned a cake in the microwave and my technique took a week to clean it out, but the smell is completely gone now.

Air the micro for a day. Then zap a bowl of finely chopped lemon rind until they boil. Boil another bowl. Quit using the micro for fish.
