If tthe speedometer runs off a cable that could be the problem and a light greasing of the cable or replacement of should do the trick. If its electronically run things get more complicated to fix and you should see a mechanic

The speedometer in the 750i is an electronic speedometer which doesn't use a big heavy rotating cable. Best to get under the car and look at the transmission plugs and connectors to make sure nothing is broken or disconnected. Then go up above and remove the instrument cluster. The tachometer and speedometer can be removed independently but have a common circuit board. There could be a break in the circuit board etching or in the connector cables or contact pins. If there is nothing visibly burned, you can remove the speedometer from the circuit board and replace it or repair it. A replacement speedometer head is estimated to cost about $1500 or more. There are some specialty shops in the U.S. that might be able to repair a damaged or burned speedometer head, but the chance of them having a 750i to test the repairs is highly unlikely. If you did the repairs or purchased a new or rebuilt speedometer head in Germany, you would be agast at the 18% Added Value Tax. If the speedometer head has a BOSCH Lable on it, you may find there is a Bosch Repair Facility in your area where you can get some help.

what year is the BMW and is it a US version. Its not just BMW but all speedometers read 8-10% high to help curb speeding on american roads. The Us Government convinced car makers to do that back in the late 70's. Thats why you will not see a cop giving you a second look when your doing 60+( when you look at your speedo) in a 55. As a second benifit the warranty expires 10% sooner. This has been a issue for many years. In NY you can take your car to a inspection station with a DYNO to check the accuracy of your speedo. You can also ask a cop to check your speedo. They can usually have you drive by at say 50 and clock you with their radar. That is if your really that concerned. If you know the gear ratio of your drive gear and the tire size there is a formula for figuring out from the engine rpm also. General rule of thumb is if your car has over drive 2000 rpm is about 60. Hope this helps.

Usually when the guages start to fail on the E32, it's either the speed sensor (located in the rear diff) or the guage cluster needing the 'capacitor fix'. If you haven't already, go to www.bimmer.org and search under the E32 section for your problem. Also try www.bimmerboard.org. I am a member of both since I own a 1990 735il. I could not afford to own my car if it weren't for these sites.
P.S.---> Sounds more like the speed sensor if only the speedometer is acting up.

Depends on it it's a cable or electronic. If electronic, it could be the speed sensor or the speedo head.
Look at the firewall in the engine bay in front of the instrument cluster. If you see what looks like a large bicycle brake cable, then it's mechanical. Follow the cable down and it will eventually go to the tranny. It could be a two piece. Disconnect it and if you can spin it, check the speedo to see if it moves. If not, bad cable.
