When you're dating, it's a sofa.
MAN: "Would you care to join me on the sofa for a glass of wine?"
WOMAN: "I would be delighted."
When you're married, it's a couch:
WOMAN: "Get your *** off the couch and paint the friggin' house!"
MAN: "Huh?"

Ultimately, I think they're the same thing. It's just that some people prefer one to the other. But for some reason I do see a couch as bigger than a sofa. I don't know what it is about the word but it seems that a couch is only that, a big long couch, whereas a sofa could be a love seat too.
