I have ever deemed it fundamental for the United States never to take active part in the quarrels of Europe. Their political interests are entirely distinct from ours. Their mutual jealousies, their balance of power, their complicated alliances, their forms and principles of government, are all foreign to us. They are nations of eternal war. – Thomas Jefferson (1823)

Europe has now evolved into a united entity and a democratic one at that. American values have had a tremendous influence from Europe as most of the founding fathers were either from or descended from Europe. Therefore Europe is the closest ally of the US. Too bad we do not consider their advice when it is to the best of our interest. (re: Iraq invasion)

It was good advice in Thomas Jefferson's time in his view point. However has early americans pushed democracy for all of the world from the time of Americas birth world war 2 and 1 would never have happened.
Transportation, communication, and induastry have mad eit impossible for america to stick it's head into the sand and act like it's none of our business.
It is not only our business it is our only chance of remaining a free country and escape the terror the rest of the world has mired itself into.

it's survival and it concerns the entire world.

This isn't 1823 anymore. World Wars I and II showed us that isolationism doesn't work. In this day and age of international jet travel and virtually instantaneous electronic communication and economically inter-twined economies we can't afford to ignore foreign affairs. If we do so, we do it at our own peril.
