i always feel bad, cuz my dog sounds like shes crying, and i feel bad waking her up, but i dont want her to have bad dreams either. does it mean theyre bad dreams if they quiver like this?

Yes animals do dream and just like us probalby some good ones and some not so good ones. I had a hunting dog that in semi retirement became a "house dog" and he would go off to sleep in front of the fire and no time later the paws would start to twitch and the lower legs start to wave around as if running. He would often bark quite loundly but sort of muffled because his mouth was shut and even start huffing and puffing as if running flat out. Some times the dream would seem to stop there but at other times you would see the muscles in his mouth twithching as if biting or chewing on something and on a couple of occaisions that was accompanied by growling and his whole head twitching as if shaking something. I bet he was dreaming of chasing cats and what he would like to do to one.
I imagine the quivering you are describing is the toned down version of some physical activity the dog is dreaming about and perhaps if she has had puppies in the past the whimpering noises may be a dream about taking care of them.
If you are worried about them being bad dreams I would just make sure that while she is awake she has lots of fun and pleasant things to occupy her time so she (like us) is more likely to dream about having a good time.
I dont think waking her up is a good idea as that in itself may develop some sort of anxiety/stress about being woken up all of the time.
Good luck & pleasant dreams.

My cats have do this as well. When they quiver and tremble and look like they are having a bad dream I wake them up by gently patting them. They wake up quickly with a little meow, look around sort of confused for a few seconds, and then realize where they are at. Then they are very happy, and purr and rub their heads on my hand! I believe they 'think' their bad dream was real and that I 'rescued' them.

Yes, they dream. And sometimes the reason they quiver or cry in their sleep is because of whatever dream they are having....My dog will start moving her legs like she's trying to run in her sleep & will even bark a little in her sleep...it's so funny & cute!!

I have two dogs that do the same thing. I think that they are dreaming about running. either they are chasing something or being chased. I think that because they are always moving their paws... if they start barking and stuff i usually go over and pet them so they calm down, and so they know they are safe. Dogs are so goofy. I have never seen a cat do that, but i have never owned a cat.

we all dream about something weither we are human or animal. Dreams are gateways to the soul. When my dog dreamt i woke him thinking he was hurt or sad. He jumped and looked around, licked my hand and fell back asleep then he had another dream and was active again. I try to lie down with him (ignoring the proverb "A man who lies with dogs will wake with fleas") just to keep him company, he usually likes that.

Funnily enough humans twitch like that in their sleep too!! It is because you are reasonably unconcious that you do not start to walk around etc. Some people talk in their sleep. most of the time they wouldn't remember their dreams just like us. Some are probably bad and some are probably good.

How would we really know? I think they probably just dream like us, some good, some bad...don't worry so much, they clearly are lucky to have you for a "mom" and what happens when they are awake means more than when they are sleeping!!!! and man do they sleep alot!!! LOL...

I don't know what their dreamoing about but mine do it all the time. Making noises and shaking. I've heard that you should'nt wake them during a dream. It is bad for them. I am not sure if this is true or not, but I don't wake them.
