I need to do a project showing how technology can be used as an aid in teaching. Its a practical hands on sort of thing, so we are expected to create some kind of software. It need not be complicated, even a powerpoint will do. What is important is that it is effective in conveying ideas and concepts to the students. Any ideas? Thanks!

I use powerpoints all the time in my classroom. My subject is Spanish. You can even just make slides with pictures and then the vocabulary for them. Or, if it is science or something like that it can be words and definitions.
For math it can be terms and then some practice problems. It is more interactive then a worksheet. My students enjoy them a lot more.
Try www.microsoftoffice.com for some good pictures and sounds. Be sure that the pictures that you choose help in the understanding of the terms.
You can do a search on powerpoints and Spanish or math, etc. and then look at some sample ones on line. I have found many in my subject area. I generally do not use them as I prefer to make my own, but they give good ideas a lot of times.

You seemed to have an idea already: a power point. Congrats! Go ahead with a power point project. Since your field is pedagogy, why don't you make a power point on Teacher - Pupil relationship. You may stress the following points:
Student oriented teaching
Personal contact
Opportunities for good interaction in the class
Possibilities for raising questions
Teacher's style of reaching out with appropriate answers
Discipline in the class room etc.
