Sounds like you're missing a codec. Most likely, you're missing either DivX or XVid decoders, search for both of them on Yahoo! and download them. DivX is usually the one.

WMP 11 should be able to play avi files. For Real player to play avi you have to go into the Real player preferences to change the file types that Real player support. You can also download the Window Media Player Classic because this player can play all kind of files.

Real Player V.10 Windows Media 11 both play Avi.

Download the required codecs, sometimes they are supplied with new Windows Media Player versions, so download them first.
