Joining a sorority is not about buying friends. I didn't join one until my junior year and so I already had made friends by then. I joined because I enjoy the sisterhood. The bonds between members is a lot stronger than that of any regular campus organization. The sorority is also about giving back to your community. Yes you can do community service elsewhere but members of the greek community are known to do a lot more than the average students. Also they tend to have some of the highest GPAs, and you can get lots of leadership experience. Advantages to joining are also future job contacts and a strong network- anywhere I go I have people that support me and will look out for me simply because of my affiliation.

Expectations vary between organizations.

It really depends on the sorority. I am a part of a sorority and it's not expensive. I, too, joined one late in my college career and have always kept my friends who were with me before the sorority. From my own experience, I see being in a sorority as something that enhanced my college experience. Yes, we paid dues (not that much) but the dues covered expenses that the organization has to pay. Through the sorority I became more involved in the community, which I still continue to do. Also, being in a sorority gives people great connections in the work world.. Again, the expectations really depend on the sorority. This may not be for everyone, but the experience was wonderful for me.

It's about paying to get friends. Sure, some do things like community service, but you don't need to be in a sorority to do work in your community and you certainly don't need to be in one to make lasting friendships. I believe that sororities and fraternities are money making schemes that feed on the insecurities of college students.

to tell u the truth. u have to actually be in one to get the whole idea and everything. but its mostly about sorority community service and becoming more comfortable being away for school and having someone next to you. its like having a best friend but a lot of them... its hard to explain but if u do ever pledge.. good luck and trust me u'll love...

by the way i'm in fraternity.. right now i no longer go to school but my (fraternity) brothers still call and hang with me. really cuz we're just family.. not friends...

in a sorority u'll have sisters that u can relate to. good luck.. and enjoy it.
