It is because the pet is still a part of them, "their" pet. But these are people who don't see others as their equal. They may have had some bad experiences in the past or they are simply prejudiced. Human beings should always take precedence over animals, as any sentient being would know.

A dog or a cat or something?
If you do, you would understand the unconditional love that pets have for you. I have a dog myself and it's the only thing in the entire world who loves me perhaps more then it loves itself.
Humans are dramatic, selfish, jealous, angry creatures. We all are. Pets give us that nice break that we need from people. It's a lot easier to show compation and consideration to something that loves you so much and would never do otherwise, then show it to another person.
Sad but true.

Like children, animals are innocent and that is a precious thing for a human to see. Another reason is humans do so much crap to the world (pollute, cut down forests, use the world's natural resources too fast, wars etc) that it is easy to hate the human race.

Some people like pets better becausee they're more loyal than humans. Pets are probably nicer to some people than humans are.

Unlike the majority of people, pets are dependable, won't stab you in the back & they provide you with unconditional love. Also: people can fend for themselves - animals can't and therefore we have a duty to protect them.

because sometimes animals are more human then us at least they can live more peacefully and not worry about a job and paying tax's
