I was dilated to 3 and lost my mucous plug a few weeks before my daughter was born. There just isn't any way to predict what order or time frame these things will happen. However to answer your question, dilating but not thinning does not have a direct affect on whether or not your water will break. It's basically a crap shoot. Good luck to you!

It is really normal for women to dilate to 2....and stay there for weeks and in some cases..months! Each pregnancy is different...so do yourself a favor and get as much rest now as you possibly can. Your body will definitely let you know when it is time.
My first child...no labor pains right away...a slow leak ( water break) was the only warning I had...45 minutes later I had a baby. My second, no water breaking at all--labor three hours and my water was broke by the doctor manually, she was trying to speed up the labor-31/2 hours later I had my second. My third....water was again a slow leak, no labor pains for almost 4- 5 hours, the ended up inducing my labor with drugs and that added another 2 or 3 hours before she was born.
Every pregnancy for every woman is remarkably different and certainly unpredictable...so try not to worry...it will happen and dilation is no predictor of how it will be.
I do hope that your little one is healthy and I hope your delivery is fast and painless!!!

If you are almost 2 cm dilated it could take hours to thin and progress the rest but what helped me thin was constant walking around only stopping when a contraction gripped me up and down stairs. It only took me an hour to thin and dilate another two cm. Because my waters wouldn't break the nurses did that for me but they only do it after 24 hours of labour as far as i know. Until your waters break the contraction won't really be regular unless you continue to walk around to help it progress. and it doesn't matter if they break or not you can still have hard fast labour. If contractions become every 2 mins or closer you really need to get a hospital quick, but don't freak mine were coming every two min and i went to hospital to be told i was only two cm dilated so the best thing is to stay calm and brethe through your labour pains don't scream or hold your brethe as it makes the pain of labour worse as i experienced. Hope this helps you.

Have you spoken to your midwife??? By thinning do you mean effaced??? Your cervix?? Everyone is completely different, i know that you know this. When i had my daughter i was 3cm dialated but completely effaced. Thinning/Effaced is the hard part apparently! You know what you're doing, just listen to yourself & your body. In saying that if you live a distance from the hospital just make sure you call the ambulance, DON"T DRIVE!!!! For me i can tell you exactly, that the feeling of thinning is not something you won't know is happening. VERY HEAVY feeling, like bub is burrowing down. All the best Mum!!

Well I have had three children and with all three of my children I had started to dialate before I had gone into labor. My water however broke with all three of my children. Your cervix will open slightly to get ready for labor and delivery before you even start labor. This is absolutely normal. You have a higher chance of your water breaking once you loose your mucus plug. You will notice this if it happens before labor begins.

Congratulations and Good Luck! Stop worrying so much you will be fine!

Dialating and effacing are as you know 2 different things. You can dialate a 4 and still not be effaced enough for labor. Be patient sweety....it'll happen.

i don't think you can techinally reach that far up to break your own water. i had sex a few days before i had my son and my water never broke. calm down and relax. you'll be fine.
