I always get a chuckle when I see these moments on SportsCenter, but questions always arise. Who assumes command? Does the tossed-skipper get to claim the 'Win'? In managers contracts, is there a clause for how many ejections a skipper can accumulate?

The bench coach assumes command of the team, unless you're Bobby Valentine, then you wear the false nose and glasses and continue to manage from the hallway of the dugout...Usually the manager that starts the game gets credit for the win. Bench coach gets credit for when a manager is suspended from MLB. There is no contractual clause that i know of preventing ejections, but it is a reflection of the team.

I know for the Astros, at least, the bench coach takes over the role of manager. It seems most managers will not let a player get ejected alone. I remember a game last season where Lance Berkman got ejected, and Phil Garner (Astros manager) stood on the field for a solid 3 or 4 minutes yelling so he would get ejected. For whatever reason, the ump wouldn't eject Garner, and he finally took his hat off and threw it to the ground till they tossed him.

There was also the time when an umpire approached one of our pitchers (named Wandy Rodriguez) one batter into a game because he thought Rodriguez gave him a nasty look at a ball/strike call. The ump said something to Rodriguez that honestly took less than a second (he was not ejected), but Garner ran out to the field and yelled at the ump. Garner did get ejected.

A manager is not afraid to get ejected to protect his players. I don't know about contract clauses and all that, but the captain goes down with the ship...

Most teams have a designated guy who takes over, kind of anassistant manager. I know for the Twins, when Gardy gets tossed, 3rd base coach Scott Ulger takes over. He has minor league managing experience, as do most coaches in the majors, so they can handle it. I know it does go towards the ejected managers career wins/ loses total still. I do not know about contract clauses, buut I have never heard of anything like that. Probably no clause, b/c sometimes it is a good thing to get tossed and cause a rukus... to get the squad fired up! Good question.

The tossed manager is still the manager of record. They normally have a pre-designated person to run the team just in case. Sometimes a manager argues (and gets tossed) to try to stir up a lethargic team.

I have read about managers that argued and argued trying to get tossed but were told by the umpire that if they have to suffer in the heat the manager must stay as well.

The bench coach usually assumes managerial duties.

I'd assume who ever started the game at manager gets credit for the win or loss.

I don't think there's any clause for ejections, although I'm sure they are fined or penalized some how.

The manager that gets the most ejections and does it so flamboyantly wins. Lou Piniella and Billy Martin are neck and neck. Piniella has the advantage though. Martin's dead.

Earl Weaver had a few very entertaining ump wars too.
