I see what you're saying.
I think the whole African American thing came about when Black people wanted to hear some form of respect from where they actually originated from. They don't want anyone to forget. It's a reminder to the whites of how the Africans got here.Kinda like a pop in the Chops.
Just like when Indians say that they are native Americans. What are they actually trying to say. They where here first and now this land is native to them because of the white man. Thats another pop in the chops.
But I know how you feel.I wasn't part of those wars but Im still getting accused of what my 4 fathers did because of my skin color.
You are an American in my book.I just hope someday we all grow together in peace and me and my future kids and yours too ..never have to deal with these terrible sinarious that seperate us from one another. The sooner we come together ...the better.

I agree. It would make more sense if immigrants were called African Americans, Irish Americans etc. and that people who are born in America will be Americans, regardsless of where their roots lie. I don't understand this obsession with labelling people by where their ancestors were from. I think it would unite people more if people started referring to all Americans as simply that... Americans. There is generally no need for additional labels.

That's true, as a whole we are Americans, -but- us black folks are of African decent, we integrated to America. Thats where the term "African American" coined from.. But technically, we are Americans - we have a label just like everybody else, And It's going to be like that forever.

i agree. i hate when people call me African American. I'm black not African. and not to be racist but white people don't have to have Americans at the end of there race. when u think about almost everybody other than white people have the word American behind it. ( African American. Chinese American, Mexican American, Scottish American, etc)
can i just be black instead of African American
its annoying

listen brother there is a part of our history that should never be lost. That history is that we orginate from Africa, we are not " of " this country. This land belongs to Native Americans land stolen from them by Europeans. We were taken from our land and stripped of our identity. We were brainwashed to believe that we have nothing to do with Africans and Africa. We still relate and have more things in common with Africans in Africa than you think. So don't asimulate completely in America but treasure your own history as well
Trust me even though people from all over the world come here for a better life they haven't lost their identity or history, they know who they are and they wouldn't change that for the world.
So keep what you have now and learn more about your roots and about who you really are and where you come from

Yeah, and there's a lot of black people from places outside of Africa. What if you're white and you or your parents were born in Africa? My friend's cousin was, and she was denied an African American scholarship. That term is so backwards.

I am a black person, but neither american nor african. I must say that words in themselves are impartial- its the tone and intended meaning that decides its connotation. The culturally aware person is gonna gesture sincerity and purity of intentions, so his/her words and actions will hardly be ever offensive except if intended.

Actress Whoopi Goldberg wishes to called "American." Other black persons like to be called African American as they feel more connected to their heritage. I think that it is an individual's personal choice!

You have a good point. Actually I dont call them anything, I dont know any personally anyway. I used to a long time ago though and one of them used to say she wasnt black, she was brown. Its just so much easier to call people people than try to figure out everyones personal preferences.
