Don't use any kind of stop leak! Never Never, Never!
Most stop leaks contain tiny pellets of plastic. UGH!
It will plug up your oil filter and the little galleys that direct oil to the camshaft. It will also plug the holes that allow oil into the hydralic lifters.
Total mess!
A lot of stop leak products also contain solvents to swell seals, if you keep using the crap, it dissolves the seals!
.
Watch out for some synthetic oils, they contain things like teflon which has the same effect as stop leak. Slick 50 was the worse offender and has been ordered off the shelves in many states.
.
Mobil makes a good synthetic that needs to be changed every 36,000 miles, which I think works out to 40,000 kilometers. You change the filter every 6,000 miles and add only make up oil at that time. Its good for new cars and motors, but you can't add any other kind of oil to it.
.
Synthetic oils don't help old, worn out engines no matter what the salesman told you. A 1993 Ford 5L doesn't need a synthetic oil. Even if you retorque the head or replace the gasket; don't bother using it.
If I were you, I would dump the syn oil and use the recommended lube that your owners manual says to use.
After driving about 500 miles, change it again. There after change your oil and filter every 6,000 miles.
.
Do Not use heavier oil!!!!!!
Use only what your owner's manual says to use!
Modern (1990-on) car engines have very close tolerances and run fine on high quality light oil. Heavy oil can cause a modern engine to overheat and seize.

A quality synthetic oil does not damage seals or cause leaks. It will, however, clean sludge residue from the seal, removing what is known as a false seal, causing a seal leak to worsen over time.

I would not use petroleum distillates based stop leak additives. It is my understanding that, while they may work initially, they eventually destroy the seal. They also are usally in a petroleum oil carrier which will reduce the superior qualities of a quality synthetic oil. Sounds like you are adding a qt. every 2000 miles or so. Not too bad for a 93' 5L. Either keep adding a qt when needed or get it fixed.

Sounds like you are change your oil every 7500 miles or so which is adequate with a quality synthetic oil.

an oil change is susposed to be done every 5000km even on synthetic, if you have an oil leak using synthetic is just wasting your money, if you're too cheap to have the leak repaired. Use "Lucas" oil, its an oil additive that helps seal the engine. I run a bottle of it in my engine at ever oil change (4000km, I stay on top of it, nothing will kill an engine faster then not doing proper maintance at the proper times). I swear by the stuff, and unless you started using synthetic oil from brand new (right after the brake in period) Its not doing anything for the engine. I work in a garage and I've worked in oil change shops, i've taken many cources on oil and they all say that with synthetic, use from new, or its not worth it. Oil changes are susposed to happen every 5000 km (3000mi) or if you do a lot of city driving and idol for long periods of time every 3000 - 4000km or 3 months, which ever comes first. The chemicals added to the oil start braking down after a wile, that is why you need to stay on top of oil changes. If the oils chemical compounds brake down then the oil has lost its lubracating properties making it no bettern then running your engine filled with water.

first off cut your time between every oil changes down to 5,000 to 7,000 and go to a shop to get that leak fixed or you could end up spending thousands of dollars for a new motor.

Your basically putting a band-aid on a wound that needs surgery. Stop leak is a temporary fix, you need to fix the gasket. The bad gasket will only get worse.
