Core 2 duo 6600; 2 gb memory;
Video cards are hard to learn about - lots of em out there, and constantly changing. Haven't found a site that lays them all out and ranks them in terms of power and performance. I am under the impression that the 7900 GS is a decent mid range card. What could I upgrade to that would give me a value added performance boost (increase power for a reasonable price). Thanks for your opinions.

I play Oblivion on an ATI X1900 GT with 256MB of video memory, and a system that is way weaker than yours.

I play at 1600 X 1200 with most of the eye candy turned on, and I get an average of 17 fps, with HDR enabled, AA: 0x and AF : 16x.

Now first of all, know that the ATI cards perform better than Nvidia in "Oblivion". So if you had the same system as I have your 7900GS will be slower, but you will have a 6600 + an extra GIG of RAM, so it should be faster.

But also note : the 7900GS is faster than my card, hence in other games it will perform way better like for example "FEAR".

The next thing is the video memory, you should get the 7900GS with 512MB of video memory. 256MB is too small for today games and the future's.

So YES you have the right system, if you get the system with the 7900 GS with 512MB of RAM.

You can go to this link to see the specs of almost all cards out there:

Scroll all the way down to find the link for the Nvidia cards.

Just goto www.tomshardware.com to compare video cards (benchmarks). The 7900GS is a little pricey for it's performance. I assume you're thinking about buying a computer. It would probably be much better building the system yourself, or a local computer store building one. Most of the "name brands" will try to stick you with the Micro atx (tiny case), not a gaming case at all. Builds up heat like crazy and fry all that money.

Yhea that video card should handle oblivion pretty good with your system but if you can afford the 7900 GT you should get that one because it has a better preformence than the 7900 GS but the 7900 GS should do the job.
