I am a fan of both. George Lucas had many influences when making Star Wars and lord of the Rings was one of those. The films of Kurosawa being another.
Ultimately there are a finite number of plots and story lines when making SciFi or Fantasy stories. Variations on religion and Good versus Evil are the most common. The redemption of Evil is another favourite (Gollum/Vader anyone)?
The one thing that really separates Rings and Star Wars though is that Tolkien created his world complete with histories and languages at a time when the idea of making movies of such work was unthinkable, indeed Tolkien thought it would be impossible and sold the rights for a film for relative peanuts.

Alot of movies fall into the good versus evil category, of which both movies are. Both have been created by brilliant minds that wove a pretty good story into a wide wonderful world. Lucas is a visionary, Tolkien a linguist with a desire. Both wound religion very subtly into their creations, without jamming it down the reader's throat. There are many, many other science fiction and other works in the similar vein. All are good, but many haven't reached the audiences that these two have. I am a Star Wars fan to the max. But I was a Lord of The Rings (Ringers, as the fans are called, mostly since the movie's introduction) reader when I was in grade school back in the 70's. His popularity goes back even farther. Lucas, and many other filmmakers in that genre, admit to Tolkien influence. It is a classic that will inspire forever. I hope Star Wars gets that notoriety, but only time will tell.

No. And about 25 years of improvement in 'special effects', and CGI differenciate Star Wars from The Lord Of The Rings.

No. Lord of the Rings isn't like Star Wars at all.

Harry Potter on the other hand...
...and Eragon.

Most modern stories steal ideas from older books. Look at Harry Potter, you can trace most of the ideas in that back to Enid Blyton and other children's authors. It's the same with most things. We just aren't original anymore.
