i am from assam.i feel very bad when people identify assam with the ULFA.the people who call themselves the liberators of assam are the ones who has caused the most damage.everyday innocent people become their victims.they think that whatever they are doing is good for the state and refuse to believe that the people do not support their motive.i would like to know that as a student what can i do to make even a small difference.what can one do to make them realise that they do not have the support of the people.how can one stop them from killing innocent people in the name of freedom movement.for how long will the people of assam suffer discrimination in other parts of india due to organisations like ULFA who instead of doing any good has given a bad name to the state.we love india and do not want a separate country.how do we make the ULFA realise this truth who are bent on creating a separate country.why don't they just live and let live.

I was reading the book "In the shaddow of Kamakhya" by Indira Goswami, the official negotiator with the ULFA.
The short stories provide a neat insight into life in rural Assam, and the mentality of ULFA cadres.
I did not know that the people of Assam suffer any sort of discrimination in other parts of India. I have many extremely good friends from Guwahati, people that India should be proud to call her own. Many Assamese study at the premium institutions in India like the IIT's, IIM's etc.
Under no circumstances should the Government of India agree to a separation of the state of Assam, The big sister among the seven north eastern states.
Living on the Western coast of India where one rarely see's the military pressence, I was a little discomfited to see the Army out in strenght not only in the city of Guwahati, but more so on the roads in the outskirts. Watching platoons of soldiers crouched on either side of the highways with Machine guns cocked, gives a sense of the reality of the dangers posed by the ULFA.
As a student, I believe the only thing that can be done is to launch an awareness campaign among the people of Assam, specially the poor and dispossesed. On the part of the Government of India, they should intensify steps to bringing Assam in line with other developed states in India. I know this is difficult given the corruption and uncertainty caused by lack of peace in the state.
On the other hand the Media should highlight the advantages of being part of India, stressing the benefits to be derived from being a part of a large, fast developing nation.
Lets all hope that our brethren in the ULFA come to realize the advantages of fostering peace in the state in order to facilitate development and better their lives.
And yes, be assured that the rest of India are proud to have Assamese as one of us.
