Sometimes the same day.... All depends on the job site.
I know one person that put in an app somewhere and then went home. The phone rings and it's the place she just left and it's the boss wanting to know--- can you start tommorrow! So, it happens. But it is rare...
Usually, it takes a couple of days up to a week. If you've wait say 2-3 days and not heard from them, give them a call and ask if they've had a chance to look at your app. They will tell you if they have or not. Sometimes, the app gets misplaced and they'll ask you to come in again. Which you should be willing to do..... It could be a test of some kind. If they haven't seen it yet, they will probably tell you they'll look it over and get back to you in a couple of days. Give them that time.... They may be checking your references and history....
Okay? Good luck....

It all depends on the work's boss, because some are too busy and it may take 2-4 days to a few weeks. If the employer is desperate you might get a call soon. If an employer doesn't answer in a week, call them back to get a status on your application. Don't be obnoxious, but show that you want the job. Be a gentleman / gentlewomen.

If you really want the job, you should call to check the status. Most places get so many applications, they don't call at all, except to schedule interviews. Your chances of getting the interview go up if you call a few days after turning in the application.
Business etiquette dictates a call a few days after the interview to let the interviewee know whether or not s/he got the job, but sadly, some employers are not doing this as they ought. (It's also a good idea for you to send an e-mail or a typed note to thank the interviewer for the interview--the day of or the next day.) In my experience, 90% of them do, but I have friends who've had the opposite experience.
Good luck!

A few days. Chances are that it will come at THE most inconvenient moment too. The call I got for my job now was when I was on the way out the door to a trial at another establishment. I was literally on the toilet and it was the job I wanted so I thought I better answer it. I was cringing as I spoke to my future employer but it was for the best in the end!

As a manager, I only call the most qualified and interesting person. Don't just drop your app. and run home. Hand deliver the thing. You spent the time to fill it out so give it to its intended. Smile and shake hands. Introduce yourself. Look your potential boss in the eye and sell your qualities. Get the number and call back. Ask when a good time to set up an interview. Good luck!

You may never get a call from them. They have many people to interview for the same job. They only call the person that is best suited for the job.
