I havent been able to find any shops that sell any stone carving anything, been to hardware stores and craft stores like michaels.
Specifically in the northwest, and even more specifically in mass.
I checked online and found sculpture house site, but nothin to compare to, so dunno if its pricey.

Opposite corner of the country but West Palm Beach has several stone carving equipment stores, and looking at their links there is this great place in Vermont that has a lot of Tools and Ideas.

For materials however I would haunt whatever rock shops I could find in the area. They prefer harder stuff like agates, but the soapstones and even sand stone and slate can be good materials and in that part of the country you could probably find your own sources to dig.

Check with a jeweler. They might know someone who does lapidary work.
