Planning to buy a mattress for my parents but not sure what type of mattress to buy. My budget WAS 1,500 but after surfing the net, it change to 2,000 or so. Anyways, not sure which to get. Should I get them a firm mattress or a soft one? I personally like firm but I'm not 65. Please share your thoughts.

Stiff joints and arthritis sometimes an issue. We could not decide for a long time.We like a little firmness but no pressure on the joints . Found perfect mattress at the most unbelievable best price at Cosco. Paid $50. membership fee to purchase king size only $659. for 12 inch memory foam that replaces old mattress and use regular box spring. I added a pillow top mattress pad on top of that.
Best thing we have ever slept on period....... Firm and soft at the same time..

I am 68 with back and leg problems for 3 years. Why? Who knows. However, I have a very soft mattress - very soft. I am in Thailand and doctor said - you have a what? Older people must use a firm mattress. The look on his face was - wooow, another stupid American. I took the soft (very soft) topper off and now sleep on the firm mattress. My leg and back problems are almost gone - after 1 week. We are talking 3 years of pain and maybe solved in 1 week with a firm mattress. Hummmm.

I think its best to ask, but from personal experence living with my Grandmother for a month I think older people like Firm mattresses.

I prefer a soft mattress, but I specifically remember her matteress being hard as a rock. I actually remember going to Wal Mart to buy a feather bed, and that wasn't even good enough and I ended up going to Costco and getting one of those 6 inch Tempropedic matterss pads with the space age memory foam.

I had the memory foam matterss topper and the feather bed, and the whole time I had to hear my grandma complain I was going to hurt my back!

Why don't you just ask them & be sure? I am not old, but I like a
pillow top mattress. Because of back problems some like a firm
mattress. I think we are all different and just as in other matters we all like different types. There are varying degrees in mattresses too. It can be an in between instead of firm or soft.
Good luck, and it's nice of you to do that for your parents.

I plump for firm. Soft mattresses don't give that support for the back, and we old folks tend to get backaches.
We also find it difficult to get out of bed with a soft mattress because we tend to sink in and we can't push ourselves up with our hands.

Well firm is best because it is easier to get out of. I wish our kids would buy us a mattress. Hope your parents know how lucky they are.

I used to sell beds. For your $1500 - $2000 you want to buy something reasonable soft but offers excellent support. Try to buy a reputable brand & spend as much as you can afford. Like most purchases, you get what you pay for. And another thing, make sure you buy a bed that sits high off the ground so its easier to get in & out of.

Well, I like them sort of half way. If it's too hard, I have trouble sleeping... Too soft and I get a backache.

The worst was a floor mat on a remote island - might have slept on concrete...
