It's a common term of affection or even casual address, expressing general goodwill and at least some degree of commonality. Don't get wrapped up in it bro, it ain't that big a deal.

Why do you think it is an expression reserved for non-white guys? Members of many religious groups refer to each other as brothers and sisters, there is nothing in our language that prohibits that.

Why do you not remember the Bible? Jesus called people brother. Why do you feel funny calling people brother? Would you be afraid to call a black person brother?

For most people that isn't any different than calling some one bud or buddy , or hey you .. doesnt really mean anything . like I said its like saying dude or whatever strikes your fancy..
