It's a common term of affection or even casual address, expressing general goodwill and at least some degree of commonality. Don't get wrapped up in it bro, it ain't that big a deal.

Why do you think it is an expression reserved for non-white guys? Members of many religious groups refer to each other as brothers and sisters, there is nothing in our language that prohibits that.
