So anyway, I was thinking of thowing out my TV(s) (or rather, pawning them. I mean, waste not want not...) . The reason being, I probably spend anywhere from 2 to 5 hours a day in front of the damn thing, when I could be doing something better. I could be socializing. I could be exercising. I could be learning an insturment, or maybe a foriegn language. And the thing is, I'm not even one of those "highly motivated people" that needs to be going forward all the time. I believe in stopping and smelling the roses, but I realized, TV is the most passive thing in the world. You actually turn your brain off when you watch it. It's been proven in scientific studies that people eat more when they're watching TV. Your brain can't even perform simple functions like telling you you're full.

So what I want to know is, does anyone have any experience or advice in this area? I can only see benefits, but I'm still reluctant, even scared to let go of the aptly named "idiot box".

Yeah, boxing it up seems like a good idea. I have a DVD drive on my PC, so I'll definetly keep watchin movies. I think that *good* cinema can be thought provoking and therefore not a complete waste of time.

Why not just put it in a box in your spare room? You may have a need for it later. And I'd get a DVD player for the movies I want to watch regardless.

Getting the TV out is a good choice especially if you have kids to think about.

Go for it! My husband wont let me get rid of ours, he'd be crushed. But I knew a guy once who threw out his TV. He was one of the most well adjusted and informed people I've ever met. I just don't watch mine. Its a waste of time. There are a few things worthwhile, but after you waste your time watching all the advertisements, you might as well have just looked it up on the internet.

Exercise some self-control. Don't sit down in front of the TV if you can think of something else to do. Perhaps move it out of the room you spend the most time in.

just unplug it. Along with the negatives, tv helps keep you connected to the world. Although you have internet, so after all it might be useless

i like Dolly! i could invite Megan Fox (she would desire to grant me some elegance advice), that guy on the historic previous channel with a huge fat chin (so i'd desire to work out what it feels like), and that i could invite a male stripper and a guy who would desire to imitate Borat. What an stunning occasion.

how bout just unplugging your TV and stashing the remote control in your underwear drawer. if you are too lazy to turn off the tv when nothing is good on, you will be too lazy to plug it back in.

I wouldn't get rid of the tv just the cable. Without cable you can get very many channels.
