Does anyone know the name of this child's tv show?

It was from the late 80s to early 90s on either nickelodeon or disney, i can't remember. All i can remember is that in the beginning of every episode, there was a guy with an old style backpack (like actual hiking pack) walking through the woods and he goes through a tree log and comes out in his "tree house", and there was a puppet bird that had the word of the day or something like that. Does anyone know the title of this show? It's driving me crazy.
