IAS is a legacy of the British administration system which was used for collecting taxes and controlling the masses in the vast colony that was India.

In this day and age why do we need a system which takes good, smart people gives them a good education and consign them to the mercy of politicians? Why can't we have a system of open recruitment of professionals for government service that is not one-way (i.e. people can choose to shift easily from government service and private sector and vice versa)?

Not only IAS but the entire system including the constitution and higher education is leagcy of British Raj. Our parilament also modelled as upper house and lower house. All our politicians and tycoons have their wealth and ranches in England.

In short, British Raj was outsourced to a bunch of crooks and it is impossible to change.
