Do negative, argumentative, belligerent U.K. soaps set an example for our impressionable youngsters to follow? For example: If someone disagrees with you, just revert to physical force instead of reason?

I refuse to watch any Soaps because they are so unrealistic despite them being portrayed as 'real life'
If you are a relatively normal person the natural thing to do when with friends and neighbours is to laugh and joke whereas in Soaps it seems to be fight, argue, bicker, injure, threaten, kill etc..
I play the 'Eastenders' game. When it's on i will of course turn it off or put something else on and flick back every few minutes to see if anyone is having a 'good time'
In the 3 years i have been doing this i would say that 95% of the time there are people arguing or fighting, girls faces contorted with rage, blokes fighting each other, battery, death threats, killings, divorces, adultery, theft, disagreements, lying etc etc etc etc etc ect .......doesn't anyone smile or laugh with each other anymore? or is this too difficult for the writers to portray in storylines?
It's the most unrealistic program on television, the most depressing, the most frustrating, the most violent, and unfortunately, for our society, the most influential.
If i could i would ban these programs as i believe they have contributed more than anything else to the degredation of our national identity and our societies values.
It's not just impressionable youngsters who i believe are being brainwashed into thinking the behaviour they see on Soaps like Eastenders is normal and acceptable. It's ill educated, lazy, moronic adults too.
Very, very sad.

Social degradation, shows itself in the form of not being able to spell. (Ha, ha,,could not resist that one!)

I understood exactly what you meant though, I mean, Eastenders has so many followers, because of the violence, intrigues and scandals! People can identify themselves with this, as they see and live similar things in everyday life/society(This is why soaps are so popular..Coronation Street for example). As for impressing youngsters, their parents are obviously responsible for allowing them to watch and can only blame themselves on the one hand hand, and on the other, the scenes, fights, scandals etc. function as an idea bank for the youngsters and I am sure these things remain in their subconsciousness until suddenly triggered or unleashed!
Violence is an all-present danger in our society and showing so much of this on the television basically conveys the message, that this is "normality". The upbringing and education of a child is primarily the task of his/her parents..(if you teach your children not to be violent, then you have to be consequent and not let them watch violence)need I say more????

Yes.It's been proved in the past that even Tom&Jerry cartoons can incite very young children to violence,so I would think that soaps can lead slightly older kids/teenagers to violence too. It's a combination,in a lot of cases,of strong skunk/other drugs/alcohol+ violent/sexual movies/programmes=crimes being committed by a certain amount of young people.

no i don't think soaps influence young people if anything the news does for example they showed on the news last week all the ingredients that are easily available to make a bomb because they decided to recreate the 7 7 bombers surroundings and included (cleverly the bomb ingredients) happy slaps was more wide spread because of media attention

soaps often relate to real life occurences, maybe a little far fetched but more often than not these story lines do happen to real people. and dont blame soaps for youngsters behaviour either, blame your aggressive, spitting, foulmouthed, lager loutish, cocky arrogant, extortionately paid role model footballers, and your no-one is greater than i- attitudes of these gangsta rappers, who glorify ghetto life, drugs, guns, violence, and gang warfare, if britains youth were influenced by soaps it'd be a hell of a better place to live in,emmerdale, corrie and eastenders, IF ONLY......our young uns would be more like them!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think soap writers should have a moral obligation to society and should write about real life and not crap for children and misguided adults to follow. Soaps are a way of tuning out of reality and they give us crap to watch. Soaps should give us something to aspire to instead they give us rape, murder, beatings, crap crap and crap again.
