My husband and I have a dream vacation planned to Maui coming up in 2 weeks. We are SO excited and yet everyone we talk to feels the need to bring up how expensive food is in Hawaii. We only budgeted $400 for food for 7 days in Maui (for the both of us) Is that unreasonable? How much should we expect to spend instead? We are not fancy people at all. A typical sit down dinner for us is Ricky's or Applebee's.

In general, food in Hawaii is 25 to 50% higher than the mainland. Try buying lunch in the supermarket deli occasionally and have a picnic. Or see if you can find accommodations that include breakfast. If you don't splurge too much, $400 should be fine.

Hey, I'm living in Hawaii right now as a college student so I definitely have to watch the expenditures! If you're talking about groceries, go to Foodland and get a Maika'i card when you go up to the register (cheapest option), or even stop at Safeway, but make sure you have your Safeway card! Watch out for tourist traps in Waikiki. Good food can be found for regular price in downtown Honolulu and places that sell plate lunches such as L&L

It is possible to eat for very cheap in Hawaii eating out. Go to the small diners and stuff. They have great food for cheap. It's not always good for you.
