Stingrays are often solitary, but then sometimes can be found travelling in groups. Because they are fish, they are also called a "school." Whales, on the other hand, are mammals. Stingrays belong to the same family as sharks, e.g. school of Hammerhead sharks.

stingrays are naturally solitary creatures. They don't have much to gain by traveling in packs.
