I think your equation questions are incomplete.

x/6 - 1 = ? What are you solving for?
What does that equation equal?

x/6 - 1 = 0
x/6 = 1
x = 6

140 is 28% of 500?
140 / .28 = 500
or
500 * 28% = 140..

= x/6 - 6/6
= (x-6)/6

(28/100) * 500
= 140
