This is a problem for a lot of people, and I've heard many people, gay and straight alike, complain about campiness and how it has nothing to do with the essence of homosexuality, which is loving the same sex.
Basically, I think it comes down to the fact that some gay people are, indeed, like that. You say, 'if you love/are attracted to the same sex then simply be that'. Well, they are, but in addition, they are being themselves, which is people who love feather boas and leather thongs and being on leashes. Not every gay man does- not by far!- but there are those who do, and asking them not to do what they do is equivalent to saying they don't exist. By doing what they happen to do, they aren't saying all gays are like that- they're just saying they happen to be. It's everyone else who projects and generalizes and creates stereotypes.
Moreover, most gay people, it seems, aren't always like this- they break out the feather boas for the pride parades and other fun events- it's a party, and they go to it to celebrate. Being taken seriously isn't what it's about- it's about a celebration of one's sexuality. Other times, they tone it down, live 'normally'. Or if they don't, hey, that's them.
Baiscally, I don't think the people who are so outrageous are intending to represent all homosexuals- they're just being who they are. If the ones who aren't so campy want to be represented fairly, all they need to do is come out and be who they are- non-outrageous- to show that we're more than costumes and garish bravado.
I hope that makes sense.

I think there needs to be a balance achieved here. As with any community there will extremes and that is the short answer to the question. Those extremes need a voice just as much as anyone else. The problem is society labels any same sex relationship as 'gay' therefore throwing a whole mixture of peoples, attitudes and beliefs together bound by one thing 'same sex relationships', which as your question illustrates doesn't even nearly meet the majority. However nobody is here to judge anyone else and if any particular group of people didn't feel their needs were being adequately met then vote with their feet and go somewhere else and form their own forum that does!

Hon, how do you know exactly what ALL of your friends do when they're not with you?
Seriously, you can't honestly say for sure you know what everyone does when they aren't standing by your side.
Besides, all that stuff you mentioned isn't a daily occurrence and you know it. It's just all show during Pride Parades, very much like all that overt sexuality during Mardi Gras Parades, or obvious public drunkenness during St. Patrick's Day Parades.
Come on, don't be selective in your pointing out the differences in others that you're uncomfortable with.
You take us seriously when we're doing our mundane everyday lives. You take us seriously when you have to do business with us, see us with our partners, see us at the movies, see us taking our children to the park or to school.
Are you suggesting no one take anyone who's ever gone to a Mardi Gras parade seriously, or a St. Patrick's Day Parade...how about if you catch a straight adult friend laughing at a children's cartoon? What of those crazy comedians who dress up in funny costumes? What about Rodeo clowns? What of anyone in the entertainment field?
Should be just as hateful and condemning of their behavior as well?
Come on, think before asking these blatantly generalizing questions.

All minority groups who have been repressed somehow by society show these signs. They try to convey they are gay (as in happy), and that they need to reinforce their gay pride by doing that in order to get acceptance by society, because if you feel uncomfortable with yourself, how do you expect others to be comfortable around you? Of course, not all gays are the same, just as your friends, some feel the need to get a sex change operation, some don't. Take these forums as a way to vent. I think the gay community is not opposed to these forums because they understand the situation they're in. So even though society and the Catholic Church are against them, I believe God understands our psychology and that must comfort them more than society acceptance.

Hi Irishmom!
I see you are a bit confused. Let me try to open your eyes here.
Those same "gay deviants" who wear boa's, thongs and leashes also live their lives, go to work, love their partners, have one night stands and sometimes get their hearts broken TOO.
Try not to let the attire of an afternoon parade block your view of the end of the day.

The "homosexuals who don their boas and leather thongs, and being tethered to leashes, etc"..."simply live their lives, go to work, love their partners, have one night stands, and sometimes get their hearts broken..." too! What I'm saying is that we are a diverse bunch.

most gay men, are just showing off there own individuality
contrary as this may seem, we are all different, some just more creative than others. besides most when dressed up like that are either performing that night or going to a party anyway.
as far as the ones dressed up to the nines, you are just mad cause they loooook better than most actual women in life,
they take pride and the extra time to look that good.
hats off to the "ladies that entertain us with there creativity and
there individuality.
besides lmao, the ones that dress up arent asking for your understanding, they are dressed the way they want, in other words "f**k you" is there attitude to start with.

Exactly, those things have nothing to do with the gay community. You're just being ignorant. Kudos.

The catholics have a leader who wears a dress and carries a purse, and you're criticizing gay people?
Or how about the outrageous behaviour of christians like Fred Phelps, the KKK/white supremacists, and christian terrorists like James Kopp and Eric Rudolph?
Clean up your own house before you comment on how other people live.
