im trying to activate a credit card and it keeps saying to enter a valid security question

If I understand the context of the question, it is asking for information which presumably only you could provide. The information is to be of a personal and easily remembered nature. A thief should have no reasonable access to this information. The date of your first kiss might be a good example if you can easily remember it. Normally, a mother's maiden name is asked. It can be anything as long as it is not public knowledge or in public record. That excludes marriage, death, and other such information on public record. That also excludes phone numbers and addresses. Just remember to keep it simple or you'll risk forgetting.

It's a question that you make up yourself or a question that you select from the drop down menu.

Basically, if you forget your password, the password recovery program will ask you the security question, and if you answer it correctly, the password is revealed, but if you answer it wrong, the password don't be revealed until you get it right.

You should pick a security question that only you or a few people you know trust knows the answer to. Pick a question that's obscure or something that a stranger wouldn't know.
