From what I read, they usually suffocate from the smoke before the fire gets to them.

I doubt it. All I've ever heard is that most people die from smoke inhalation before they are ever on fire.

If someone ran back into a burning house for someone or something, he may be on fire and feel it, before the smoke inhalation got to him.

They usually lose consciousness fast because of the smoke and the smoke is usually what kills them, not the fire. So no, I think they usually don't feel the burning, although there are exceptions.

Thankfully they generally die from the smoke inhalation first, so no, they don't feel the pain of burning.

Odds are they will die from carbon monoxide poisioning first, but if they dont they will feel the burn til it get to the 3rd degree. Once it reaches 3rd degree the nerve endings are burnt then just numbness.
