17 year olds like to drive A LOT, so you want something that will get good gas mileage. Also, anything an insurance company could consider a "sports" car (eclipse, mustang, etc) will cost you more premium. Since they also have a tendency to drive more reckless, and statistically they are more likely to get into an accident, I wouldn't recommend anything more than a 4-cylinder because the additional horsepower may be too much for their lack of experience.
I would suggest something that is NOT newer than 5 years, because you don't want to pay all that money, only to have them wreck it. Also, something with air bags & anti-lock breaks. VW's are good & safe. Best gas mileage would be a Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, or Nissan Sentra, those are the cars I can think of off-hand, but I'm not sure about their safety features.
Good luck!

An Accord. It will feel like quality, look nice, have good safety and power, and handle well - but not so well that they'll think they can drive crazy in it.
My third car was a 90 Accord, and I still miss it. I had it from 20-24.
A Civic is a good suggestion too, I have an 02 now and the mileage is great. But, it's easier to throw around and doesn't feel as solid.

Neons last forever, you can get cheap parts for them from any junkyard, and are easy to fix. They are safe, and above all, FAR cheaper then 17,000. Why would someone that young want to go in debt so fast, haven't you read the paper that the current generation is called generation debt?? The economy is really going to suffer when all the young people go bankrupt!!!

A Dodge/Plymouth Neon, if you want to buy used. They are really dependable cars.
Otherwise, a nice Hyundai. They're good on gas, have personality, are pretty cheap, and have a great warrantee.
If you can, make him/her wait till their 18th birthday. Or he/she may want an upgrade for a gift. Also, better to buy a used car for a couple thousand. Let the kid get a real handle on driving before investing so much.

a honda accord, you should be able to find a good used one with not a lot of miles for the price range or maybe even a new one with not a lot of stuff on it. They are very safe cars, have great gas mileage, and plenty of room for stuff.
a nissan altima is also a great choice. great gas mileage and about the same as the accord, but you could probably get a little better deal on one.

a beetle TDI or a Jetta TDI. VW's have great warranties on their used vehicles and it sounds as though you have enough for one. You will save using diesel and you can also use bio diesel which is better for the environment, and yes it is safe to use biodiesel in your VW engine and yes it can be mixed with regular diesel. I think you can still get a tax break too if you use biodiesel.

dont just give them a car,if they think they are reponsible enough to drive then let them get a job and commit to at least half the payment and prove they are responsible enough to have a car.
If you just give them them one because they want one you are not doing that young person any favors, and they will expect you to hand them the next thing they want also.
so with that being said let the teenager get involved in the purchase to just make shure they know they are responsible for a certain amount every month befor they get to picky about there choices.

Any reliable compact. Check Consumer Reports for ratings, and your insurer for likely insurance costs. Costs will vary depending on the type of car.
