I bought a $99 special (Spectrum from Khols Dept. store). I have had it for about 2 weeks & really like it. I have spent about 10 hours total time attempting to learn the chords. Should I spend more & get a better guitar? For example: If I buy an Epiphone, would it be easier to play? I have trouble getting my fingers to properly play the chords & wondered if the guitar has something to do with that.

What I've found, and I've been playing for about ten years now, is that "cheaper' guitars tend to have very low action, most of the time, too low. It makes it difficult to play certain chords as they tend to just buzz - and Epiphone Les Paul, while not and "original" is a solid investment and you're certain to get years of joy from it.

Good luck

I would suggest buying an electric guitar from a reputable dealer. The Gibson Epiphones are excellent guitars. I used to sell them. There are many other brands to consider, since you are a beginner, I would not invest too much$. The saying goes: you get what you pay for! Most music stores will have a guitar tech who will set up the instrument for you. The guitar has a lot to do with it.

Most of steel-string guitar are hard to play. If you're a beginner, I recommend you to start learning to play with a spanish guitar, because nylon strings will less hurt your fingers. And if you already know to play guitar a lot, go to a music store and buy a string lubricant just like Finger-ease, and that will make you to play it easier any kind of strings.

It's a good idea to get a real good guitar (like Epiphone, Ovation, Gibson....) to get the perfect string TENSION that is just what difficults your playing, in this case. Better brand guitars are made in a better way, too, so don't use cheap steel-string guitars, please buy a GOOD one.

STAY AWAY FROM CHEAP GUITARS!!!! If you dont get it from a guitar store its probably bad (especially Khols), and Epiphones are not good! Most cheap guitars untune VERY fast like less than a day, try to go for something for like 250 or higher or try to find guitars on ebay (PRS, Santana, Gibson,) Not trying to be mean or anything. Ask a guitar person they can find the propper size for you. So yes cheap electric guitars are harder to play. Good Luck!!! :)

If you get a good guitar to start off with you will get greater enjoyment from it in the long run and you don't have to worry about getting a new one when you have learnt it. As always, try before you buy.
