The first number "295" and "265" indicates the width of the tire in millimeters.
So 295/50R15 means that the tire is 295 mm wide, it is 50 mm high and 15 inshes in diameter. The R means that the treads of the tire are Radial.
Apparently you are buying tires for SUV, or 4WD applications. Keep in mind that wider tires increase stability on curves but they also increase fuel consumption.
For snow usage, I strongly advise the smaller 265 tires .
Good luck

The information from Fred C is correct.
However, the previous poster (edit - meant first reply, not the response just above mine) incorrectly stated that the 50 meant 50mm in height. For the purpose of clarification, I would like to point out that the number 50 is the aspect ratio of the tire and means that the sidewall height of the tire is 50 percent of the width or approximately 148mm in the first case and 133mm in the second case.

The first number is the width. 295 is 295 mm or 11.61 inches, and 265 is 265 mm or 10.43 inches. You should know how to convert these basic measurements from school.
