I don't believe they should be above the age of eighteen, I believe they should be above the age of 25.
You will understand as you get older.
My personal proof is the fact that in my first presidential election, I voted for Perot!
"The truth" as it pertains to the majority of people under the age of eighteen is rooted in whatever their parents, professors, or favorite news channel has spoon fed them and it is tainted with the tragedy of pimples, dating, and how to score beer - or worse.

I think 18's a pretty good age, if not a little young. Honestly when I started high school, I had almost no idea of what was going on, other than what I heard from my parents and friends. I don't pretend that I know everything about politics now, but I have definitely come a long way in just three years.
I have a lot of friends who were able to vote for the first time this past fall (I won't be 18 for another few months), and I really think some of them should be kept from the voting booths at all costs. Most of them are great, though - intelligent, well-informed, etc. I dunno, though, part of me thinks 18 is still too young.
EDIT: Ok, whoever said the abortion laws are affecting them and their fellow under-age friends, you should not be having sex in the first place, and I am VERY glad teens don't get to vote about abortion laws. And as for the drinking, there's a reason the drinking age is 21 - alcohol can be very dangerous for growing brains, and they grow into your 20's.

Because at 15, 16 and 17 contacts that are signed without the parents consent are thrown out. They are still living with mom and dad and mom and dad are responsible for them. When they hit 18 then they are legally responisble for their action. Therefore the voting age is 18.
At 16, 17 and 15 I would and could legally (if they were allowed to) go to the polls with my child and have him or her vote the way I wanted them too. So that would count as 2 votes. That's why it's illegal.
It's great they know about politics and express concerns about the country, this way when they turn 18 they will want to vote!

They have to set a minimum standard for voting, and age is the easiest to monitor and enforce. I agree with you that there are some people younger than 18 that are mature enough to vote, just as there are people under 21 mature enough to drink alcohol responsibly, and people under the age of 21 who can gamble responsibly, and people under the age of 16 who are responsible enough to drive a car...Still, I know some 35 year olds that aren't mature enough to vote, drink, drive, or gamble. There is no objective standard that will allow all the people who are ready to vote to do so while at the same time excluding those who aren't mature enough to vote.
Personally, I think if you under 18 and you have a job and are paying income taxes, you should be allowed to vote. Otherwise, they shouldn't tax your income if they don't give you a voice on how it's spent.

Because some maturity is expected of voters, and not of 15 to 16 year olds. Not saying it's wrong or right, just htat's the reasoning. The voting age was reduced from 21 to 18 because 18 year olds were getting drafted, and the logic was that they're old enough to die for their country, they should be able to vote.

While children as young as 13 were fit to get married and have children several centuries ago, we have a society now that educates children until the age of 18. While politically motivated and in many cases fully capable of making an informed decision, the age limit is there to allow all voters to have a chance to complete public education. I'm sure it will change one day as we demand more from students before putting them in the workforce.
Personally, I'm not sure if 18 is where I would set the bar. The human brain does not fully understand danger until the age of 25. Many issues would benefit from that knowledge.

It's based off of counting on the fact that if your 18 your more responsible and mature.... Unfortunately, I know many people my age (mid 20's) that should not be allowed to vote. I guess that's just the way it's going to be. Good for you for being so interested about society at this early of an age (I'm assuming you 15-16).

Almost everywhere in the world the legal age is 18, shouldn't we follow it too? Look, it is easy to bribe youngsters even if they're 18 or 16. Practically, there's no difference but theoretically almost every parent thinks their children attain full mental maturity only at 18. And that has stuck.

At 18 you are legally an adult, the government and society consider you at an age in which you should be self-sufficient and responsible, your parents are no longer legally responsible for you and as such can not make decisions for you. As a minor somebody needs to do what is in your best interest this includes electing politicians that pass laws that benefit you. Because after the age of 18 they can no longer do that, you need to be able to be involved in selecting people that represent your interests policy making

just a limit. has to be one or people would make there five year olds vote. i agree that some 15 and 16 year olds are educated enough to vote, and it goes the same way that some 18 and 19 year olds are not educated enough to vote. but there has to be some line drawn for the majority maturity of the ages.

18 may be the maximum age within which a girl becomes a woman. Even though boys may become men much before 18 ( he he he ) for equality age 18 is kept as attaining majority. It is further expected that men and women will have independent thinking after that age only.
