2 Questions:

1. Is the ipod nano charging when it says "Do not disconnect"? And connected to the USB port.

2. One time I saw an actual battery icon in the middle of the screen taking up about 1/4 of the screen... why does this not always pop up?

1. Yes, it is charging when it says 'Do not disconnect'.

2. The battery icon appears when you have ejected the iPod from iTunes but not from the computer.

1. Yes. It's also syncing, which is the main reason it tells you not to disconnect.

2. If it has dropped back to the menu and you let it sit long enough, it'll go into sleep mode, at which point the charging status icon (either a battery with a flashing lightning bolt to signify charging, or a battery with a non-flashing plug to signify a full charge) will always display if it's plugged into a power source. If you want it faster, just click and hold the Pause button to force it into Sleep mode. The big charge status icon will only show up in Sleep mode, however, which is why it doesn't always display, though you can also see a tiny version of the same thing in the upper right corner when it's powered up.

Oh, and BTW, iTunes 7 will automatically soft-eject your iPod after it's done syncing. It will still show up in your iTunes sidebar and is still capable of being resynced without being unplugged/replugged first, but you don't have to manually eject it before unplugging it if the iPod will display the standard menu screen instead of the Do Not Disconnect icon.

Yea actully it is if you look in the top right hand corner it will have a battery and it will either have a lightning bolt thingy(fully charged) or a battery thingy (charging) anytime you plug it into your computer it will charge if need be.
