You can not just *change* the settings. You require more physical memory (RAM) 256 (as you claim) is not much for most applications these days, but if you have only 184 available, I would highly suspect you actually have 192 with 8 being used by the video card. (184+8=192, which is a common memory total on computers until about 2002) This occurs with some older machines, that have a built in video card as compared to a PCI, AGP or PCI-E video card installed in a slot.
Your only real solution is to go to a computer store and consider bringing your computer (Just the tower).. You don't need the monitor or keyboard, mouse, cords, etc. See if it is still possible to add memory to your computer. However, you should really consider getting a newer system if you are going to play video games. If a memory upgrade is available, make sure a technician installs it. Many stores will install ram for free... but ask first.

It sounds to me like your computers BIOS is not reading your RAM correctly or you do not have matched RAM sticks. The plan and simple truth is you need to upgrade your RAM. Nothing is more painful than playing a PC game with the minimum amount of RAM. You must set your game detail so low that the game ends up not being fun to play. When someone ask for advice I hate making the blank statements to spend more money on your computer (like so many others will do without hesitation) but in you case I see no other choice.

Probably some shared ram for graphics, and the game requires 256 mb free ram.

you may have 256MB Ram but other programs are also running on it and you only have 184MB free so in order to fix it you need to go and buy more ram!

you probably need 256mb of FREE ram....not total RAM...you have 184 free...go to control panel, system and on the main page on the bottom you will see memory/memory used...
